Today’s Menu – No Free Lunch
A recent poll, carried out by a polling company with ties to the Democrat party ( James Carville) revealed that Independent and Republican voters are not against Obama because of race. The race card works for improving donations to the Reverends Jackson, Wright and Sharpton, but the race card is a two of clubs in the card game of political reality.
Rather, this Carville – Greenburg poll demonstrated that independents and Republicans were against the Obama administration because of ethical and moral policy differences. They see his administration slowly taking the U.S. away from the precepts of our Constitution, as it leads us down the road of Socialism. Please don’t take my word for it. Simply look up both definitions and examples of Socialism. There are numerous examples of this form of government, and the simple fact is that all have failed.
This socialist creeping incrementalism in domestic policy is nothing new. As a matter of fact, I am very surprised that the average American is able to distinguish this pattern in policy direction, given the dumbing down of our teaching institutions, over the last 40 years, and our lack of knowledge of world history. In addition, the last election was a perfect example of socialism taking advantage of an economic picture which required massive change. However, the term change does not mean intrusive big government with its host of regulations and Czars. Change is a natural phenomena which does not require big government. It requires a mentally and morally healthy electorate, willing to work harder to make up for its mistakes.
Dictators have used this sort of socialistic policy in the past, and it has served them quite well. Let us look backward just 70+ years, to the Second Reich of the Weimar Republic. Germany had suffered serious financial and military setbacks at the Treaty of Versailles. The French and English were especially insensitive to the German situation after the First World War. As a matter of fact, it was France and Britain which brought upon themselves the devastation of the Second World War, which once again required the United States to come to the rescue and save Europe’s bacon. I have always wondered to edits the French history books. Certainly the hubris of the French would not exist if the actual truth were told about the inadequacies of their government. I digress.
By the early 1930’s, Germany was essentially a bankrupt nation without any means of supporting itself. From the ashes came the National Socialistic Workers Union Party, or NAZI for short. Promising full employment, international respect, an end to the hyper inflation brought about by war debts, along with a rightful place in the nations of Europe, the Nazis slowly, over several years, were able to convince the voters of Germany that a vote for the NAZI party was a vote for renewal – for change. As a result, Adolph Hitler was able to become the leader of the Third Reich.
Once in power, he immediately began to make treaties and concordats with nations and religious organizations who were unable to see through his lies. His rants against international Jewry were dismissed as mere political rhetoric, by a nation who sought “anyone” who could bring them out of their economic and political cave. Despite Hitler’s early attacks against Jews, Catholics and Communists, despite his national law ordering sterilization of those who carried genetic pathology, despite his murder of those who were his associates, through all the years of his political rise (the night of the long knives), he still was able to fool the masses by his driving rhetoric. The public saw what it wanted to see and was blind to the reality of what was actually happening to them.
There is no question that Hitler was evil, that Hitler was the devil incarnate and that Hitler was an mortal mutation. But, Hitler was a smart politician. He told the people just what they wanted to hear, and despite the horrors which were visible around them, his power grew, year after year, until it was too late. Germany became exactly what Hitler envisioned the Third Reich to be – a European power to be reckoned with, and perhaps, at the time, the most powerful military in the world.
Unfortunately, polls were not taken at the time, to demonstrate exactly what the citizenry thought of their new dictator. Unfortunately, once Hitler was elected to replaced Hindenberg, and become the sole leader of Germany, there were no further elections by which to unseat him. We Americans have that privilege. We may make a mistake in our elections, but we can correct that mistake in short order. That was a gift of our Constitution.
Americans are beginning to realize that there is no free lunch. We didn’t spend decades digging ourselves into a hole, only to be rescued by a party which promises that big government can provide for every need. We are beginning to see that the level playing field and classless society, as contemplated by the liberal Democrats, is not in America’s best interest, any more than the National Socialist Workers Party was in the best interest of Germany in the 1930’s.
America will have to dig itself out of the hole it is in, and that will require a paradigm change in how we do business, how we treat our trading partners, and how we defend this nation. Some of those changes may seem harsh, but we did not reach our pinnacle by being soft. We won’t however dig ourselves out of our hole by depending on our government to do the job for us. In truth, the hole we are in was, in great part, excavated by that very government.
America will succeed in reaching its prior apex among world nations. However, to do so will take the courage of the individual voter to say, ” I have had enough. I’m not going to take it anymore.” Only then will the Constitution again be the law of the land, and not an incompetent party, made up of cronies and aloof professorial types who have never had an honest job a day in their lives. Yes, Hitler may have been smart, but in the end, the truth prevailed. He fooled his own people for a time, but he could not fool the world.
